Tribute to Ernie Magwood

Wednesday the 22nd November 2010, was one of the saddest days in the long history of the East Tyrone Cycling Club. It was with great sadness that the cycling world and the general community learnt that Ernie Magwood, the much respected Club Captain and Vice Chairman of the East Tyrone club, had lost his battle with illness at the age of forty seven.

Ernie left an impression on all those who knew him with his dignity and unassuming manner. His undoubted prowess on a bike was matched by his enthusiasm when the finishing line was crossed. It was then that the dedicated club man took over, offering encouragement and assistance and doing the numerous small jobs that go unseen. He was a champion both on and off the bike, unselfishly putting more back into the sport than he ever took out.

As a club member once said, “Ernie pressed a button when he got out of bed in the morning, and immediately got into cycling mode for the rest of the day.” Ernie’s modesty led him away from the limelight, and he was happy just to be one of the boys. He was slow to offend, but always enjoyed the banter with his dry sense of humour. A few years ago when East Tyrone numbers were in decline Ernie, along with a club mate, was instrumental in setting up the youth academy which has become one of the club’s success stories, and which led to a resurgence in the senior ranks of which Ernie was so proud.

In recent years his wife Christine was his strongest ally as he devoted more and more of his time and energy to the good of his club, and he became a great ambassador for the sport he loved. The large attendance at his funeral of his club mates, and the entire cycling fraternity from all parts of the country, was testament to the regard in which he was held.

We will always be proud and privileged that Ernie Magwood was a member of the East Tyrone Cycling Club.
